Page 2 : What are the golden rules when designing a display?
How to plan the layout of a window ?
1. Each year, draw up a schedule for changing the window display, according to the seasons (Christmas, sales, new collections, etc.), as well as sporting and cultural events. Current affairs and social issues can also provide sources of inspiration. On average, a window display is changed 10 to 15 times per year, and approximately every three weeks in fashion boutiques.
How to make the most of the windowpane?
2. If you have artistic flair, or know someone who does, transform your window pane into a work of art.
3. Don’t forget the display itself: graphics must never conceal the products.
4. The design could consist of a simple frame made of wide, coloured tape: this grabs attention and accentuates the composition of your display, while costing very little.
5. Take care when choosing the colour of the tape or any graphics: it must contrast with the window background and should not be too dark to be clearly visible/legible.
What other rules and guidelines must I adhere to?
6. Under current legislation in Brussels, text and graphics on shop windows must not cover more than 50% of their surface area.
7. It may seem obvious, but a shop window must be spotlessly clean! Any hint of dirt gives your business an uncared-for image. So before affixing self-adhesive or painted lettering to your window, apply soap to the surface: this will allow you to adjust the position of the stickers more easily.
