Renovate your shopfront... but think carefully!
The external design of a retail unit contributes to the success of the shop. It conveys a strong image: your shop’s personality.
What are the key points to consider in your design? The following chapters provide diagrams and examples to inspire you. You will see that enhancing your shop does not necessarily require a large investment; you can make a positive impact on turnover and sales, even on a shoestring budget.
Before renovating, do your research!
Regional and municipal regulations aim to preserve the architectural and visual character of the facade. If you intend to change colours, alter the surround, or modify or remove any element of the facade, you must seek planning permission in advance.
When renovating, you must adhere to various accessibility requirements, while certain buildings are listed and are subject to stricter rules. Finally, structures belonging to the business (signs, sun awnings, etc.) must not, under any circumstances, impinge upon the upper storeys, and some, (such as luminous or illuminated signs), are subject to a municipal tax.
It is often a good idea to use existing features and materials, rather than embarking on an overhaul or substantial renovation work. In short, you must ALWAYS consult your municipal planning department in advance to find out what changes you are allowed to make to your shopfront!
